What Is the Sandžak and Where Is It?
The Sandžak (also Sandschak or Raška) is a historic region in southwestern Serbia and northeastern Montenegro. The area includes cities such as Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Tutin, Prijepolje and Nova Varoš on the Serbian side, and Pljevlja, Bijelo Polje and Rožaje on the Montenegrin side. The name "Sandžak" comes from Ottoman Turkish and means "administrative district" (from Turkish Sancak). The region was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1463 to 1912 and remains home to a significant Bosniak population to this day. Novi Pazar, the largest city of the Sandžak, was an important trading centre at the crossroads between the Ottoman Empire and Central Europe. The old town of Novi Pazar with its mosques, hamam and bazaar bears witness to this centuries-old heritage. The Ras Fortress and the Sopoćani Monastery nearby are a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a place where Christian and Islamic history overlap.
Sandžak Jewellery: Ottoman Heritage, Gold and Bosniak Tradition
The jewellery tradition of the Sandžak is shaped by Ottoman, Balkan and Islamic influences. Novi Pazar was for centuries a centre of craft and trade: goldsmiths, coppersmiths and filigree artisans defined the bazaars of the city. In the Bosniak culture of the Sandžak, gold plays a central role at weddings: the bride is adorned with gold jewellery in elaborate ceremonies – necklaces, bangles and earrings are all part of the ensemble. Traditional Bosniak dress (Dimije and Fes) is complemented with jewellery at celebrations. The craftsmanship of the Sandžak shares roots with the jewellery traditions of Bosnia and Turkey but has developed its own distinct regional character. In the diaspora, jewellery with Sandžak motifs serves a special purpose: the coat of arms around the neck makes belonging visible – to the region, to culture, to home.
Material and Quality of Our Sandžak Necklaces
Our Sandžak Collection offers two material lines. The Sandžak necklace for men (56 cm in gold, 65 cm in silver, pendant 2.3 cm) and the Sandžak necklace for women (40 cm + 15 cm) are made from 316L stainless steel – rust-proof, waterproof and scratch-resistant. The Sandžak crest necklace for men (60 cm, crest 2.5 cm) and the Sandžak crest necklace for women (40 cm + 5 cm, hand-set with over 100 stones) are crafted from 18K gold-plated brass. We also offer the Sandžak crest bracelet for women (16 cm + 3 cm) and the Sandžak crest ring for women (adjustable). All variants are waterproof and allergy-friendly. All products come with a 365-day guarantee.
Sandžak Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep significance in the Bosniak culture of the Sandžak – at weddings and family celebrations, gold jewellery has been the most meaningful gift for generations. The gold versions of our Sandžak necklaces honour that tradition: the stainless steel necklaces feature 18K gold plating for a warm glow, while the brass crest pieces offer an especially rich gold tone. The silver versions provide a cooler, more modern look. For the complete set, we offer the Sandžak women's bundle – necklace and bracelet at a reduced price. We also have the Sandžak phone case with the map design.
Buying a Sandžak Necklace – What to Look For
If you're looking to buy a Sandžak necklace, pay attention to three things: material, craftsmanship and chain length. You can choose between 316L stainless steel (more durable, scratch-resistant) and brass with 18K gold plating (warmer gold tone, the women's crest version features hand-set stones). For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the coat of arms or map should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length: men's 56 to 65 cm, women's 40 cm plus extension. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.
How Many People From the Sandžak Live in the Diaspora?
The Sandžak diaspora is concentrated primarily in Western Europe and Turkey. In Germany, an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 people of Sandžak heritage reside – particularly in Frankfurt, Offenbach, Munich and the Ruhr area. Frankfurt is widely regarded as the unofficial capital of the Sandžak diaspora in Europe. Significant communities have also formed in Austria (especially Vienna), Switzerland and Sweden. In Turkey, descendants of Bosniaks from the Sandžak who emigrated in the 19th and 20th centuries live primarily in Istanbul and Bursa. The bond with the home region remains particularly strong in the diaspora: many families travel regularly to the Sandžak and maintain traditions, language and culture across generations. A Sandžak necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
