Roma Necklace – Wear Your Identity With Pride

A Roma necklace is more than jewellery – it's a declaration of belonging. The wheel, the colours blue and green, the Romani identity: with a necklace from d'origine, you carry your Roma roots right where the world can see them. Our Roma Collection currently features the Roma crest necklace for women and the Roma women's bundle – additional products are in the works. Whether you grew up in Berlin, Bucharest, Belgrade, Paris or London: this necklace connects you to your heritage. At d'origine, people from more than 40 countries and cultures show where they come from.

What Does the Wheel on the Roma Flag Mean?

The Roma flag features a red Chakra wheel on a blue and green background. The wheel – "Chakra" in Romani – is the central symbol of Roma and Sinti worldwide. It represents journey, path and movement – themes that have defined Roma history for centuries. The 16 spokes of the wheel reference the Dharma wheel and reflect the North Indian origins of the Roma: the ancestors of the Roma left the Indian subcontinent approximately 1,000 to 1,500 years ago and migrated through Persia, the Byzantine Empire and the Balkans into Europe. Blue stands for the sky and freedom, green for the earth and nature. The flag was officially adopted in 1971 at the first World Romani Congress in London – a milestone in the recognition of the Roma as a transnational people. At the same congress, "Djelem, Djelem" was adopted as the Romani anthem – a song that speaks of shared experiences of migration, persecution and solidarity. The 8th of April is celebrated worldwide as International Romani Day.

Romani Jewellery: Gold, Craft and a Millennia-Old Culture

Gold and jewellery hold deep meaning in Romani culture that goes far beyond decoration. Gold jewellery represents prosperity, family bond and standing, and plays a central role at weddings, baptisms and family celebrations. In many Roma communities, gold also serves as a form of financial security – gold coins and jewellery are passed down as stores of value across generations. The Roma have enriched the craft traditions of the countries they live in: in Spain, they influenced the goldsmithing of Andalusia; across the Balkans, they have been known as copper and silversmiths for centuries. The Romani language itself bears witness to the long journey: it belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family and contains loanwords from Persian, Greek and Slavic languages – a living archive of migration history. In the diaspora, jewellery with Roma motifs serves a special purpose: the wheel around the neck makes belonging visible – to a culture that transcends borders.

Buying a Roma Necklace – What to Look For

If you're looking to buy a Roma necklace, pay attention to material, craftsmanship and chain length. Our crest necklace is made from brass with 18K gold plating – providing a warm gold tone that is waterproof and allergy-friendly. For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the wheel and its spokes should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. The chain length of 40 cm + 5 cm extension fits most women comfortably. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.

How Many Roma and Sinti Live in Europe and Worldwide?

The Roma and Sinti are the largest ethnic minority in Europe, with an estimated 10 to 12 million people. The largest Roma communities live in Romania (approximately 2 million), Bulgaria (around 750,000), Spain (around 750,000), Hungary (around 600,000) and Slovakia (around 500,000). In Germany, approximately 150,000 Sinti and Roma reside – the Sinti have been settled in Central Europe for over 600 years. France is home to around 400,000 Roma and Gens du voyage, and the United Kingdom to approximately 300,000 Romani and Irish Travellers. The history of the Roma in Europe is marked by persecution: during the Porajmos (the genocide of the Roma under National Socialism), up to 500,000 Roma and Sinti were murdered. Today, Roma organisations worldwide advocate for recognition, equal rights and cultural visibility. A Roma necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that belonging – quiet, but visible. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes identity visible.
