What Does the Trident in the Ukrainian Coat of Arms Mean?
The Ukrainian national emblem features a golden trident (Tryzub) on a blue field – one of the oldest national symbols in Europe. The trident dates back to Volodymyr the Great (980–1015), the prince of Kyivan Rus who adopted Christianity as the state religion in 988 AD. The Tryzub served as the princely emblem and appeared on coins, seals and buildings. The exact meaning of the three prongs remains debated – interpretations range from the Holy Trinity to a stylised word "Volya" (freedom) to a falcon motif. The Ukrainian flag features two horizontal stripes in blue and gold: blue for the sky, gold for the wheat fields – the image that represents Ukraine worldwide. Kyivan Rus was one of the largest states in Europe during the 10th and 11th centuries. Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv (founded 1037) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bears witness to this golden age. When you wear a Ukrainian necklace, you carry a symbol that encompasses over 1,000 years of history.
Ukrainian Jewellery: Vyshyvanka, Pysanka and Goldsmithing Tradition
Ukraine has a rich craft and jewellery tradition deeply rooted in Slavic culture. The Vyshyvanka – the traditional embroidered shirt – is the best-known symbol of Ukrainian craftsmanship: each region has its own embroidery patterns and colour combinations symbolising family, origin and protection. International Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated worldwide every year on the third Thursday of May. The Pysanka – the intricately decorated Ukrainian Easter egg – is part of Ukraine's cultural heritage and is created using a wax-resist (batik) technique. In goldsmithing, Ukraine looks back on a tradition reaching to the Scythians: the Scythian gold treasure (7th–3rd century BC) from present-day southern Ukraine ranks among the most significant archaeological gold finds in the world – pectorals, bangles and vessels of breathtaking fineness. At Ukrainian weddings, jewellery plays a central role: the bridal wreath (Vinok), adorned with flowers and ribbons, is the symbol of the Ukrainian bride. In the diaspora, jewellery with Ukrainian motifs serves a special purpose: the trident around the neck makes belonging visible – to culture, to history, to home.

Ukrainian Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep meaning in Ukrainian culture – from the Scythian gold treasures to the golden domes of Kyiv's churches to the gold jewellery at weddings. The gold version of our Ukrainian necklace honours that tradition: the 18K gold plating on brass provides a warm, rich glow that highlights the trident. The silver version offers a cooler, more modern look. Both variants are waterproof and allergy-friendly.

For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the trident should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length: men's 60 cm, women's 40 cm + 5 cm. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.
How Many Ukrainians Live Abroad?
The Ukrainian diaspora is one of the largest in Europe. In Canada, approximately 1.4 million Canadians claim Ukrainian heritage – the third-largest ethnic group in the country. The province of Alberta and the city of Winnipeg are historic centres of the Ukrainian-Canadian community. In the United States, around 1 million Americans report Ukrainian ancestry, concentrated in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland. In Germany, approximately 1.1 million Ukrainian nationals reside – one of the largest Ukrainian communities in the EU. Poland hosts around 1.5 million, with significant communities also in the Czech Republic, Italy and Spain. Ukraine itself has roughly 37 million inhabitants. A Ukrainian necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
