What Does the Montenegrin Coat of Arms Mean?
The Montenegrin national emblem features a golden double-headed eagle with a crown and a lion on its breast shield. The lion stands with one paw raised before a background of blue and green – the sky and the mountains of Montenegro. This emblem dates back to the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, which ruled Montenegro for over two centuries as a prince-bishopric and later as a kingdom. Petar II Petrović-Njegoš (1813–1851), prince-bishop and one of the greatest poets in South Slavic literature, wrote the epic "The Mountain Wreath" (Gorski Vijenac), still regarded as the country's defining literary work. The name Montenegro – Crna Gora in Montenegrin – means "Black Mountain" and refers to the dark, densely forested slopes of the Lovćen massif. Montenegro gained independence in 2006 through a referendum. The country combines Mediterranean coastline with rugged mountain landscapes: the Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most beautiful natural harbours in Europe.
Montenegrin Jewellery: Gold, Filigree and Adriatic Tradition
Montenegro shares a rich jewellery tradition with its neighbours, shaped by Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influences. The coastal towns of Kotor, Budva and Bar were trading centres on the Adriatic for centuries and maintained close connections to the goldsmithing craft of Venice and Dubrovnik. Silver and gold filigree work is part of the region's traditional craftsmanship. In the interior, Orthodox crosses and icon pendants are the most traditional pieces of jewellery – closely tied to the Serbian Orthodox Church, which plays a central role in Montenegro. At Montenegrin weddings, gold is an essential part of the celebration: the bride receives gold jewellery as a sign of family bond and prosperity. In the diaspora, jewellery with Montenegrin motifs serves a special purpose: the double-headed eagle around the neck makes belonging visible – to culture, to family, to home.
Material and Quality of Our Montenegro Necklaces
Our Montenegro Collection offers two material lines. The Montenegro necklace for men (56 cm in gold, 65 cm in silver, pendant 2.3 cm) and the Montenegro necklace for women (40 cm + 15 cm) are made from 316L stainless steel – rust-proof, waterproof and scratch-resistant. The Montenegro crest necklace for women (40 cm + 5 cm, pendant 2.4 cm), the Montenegro crest bracelet for women (16 cm + 3 cm) and the Montenegro crest ring for women (adjustable, pendant 1.5 cm) are crafted from 18K gold-plated brass. All variants are waterproof and allergy-friendly. All products come with a 365-day guarantee.
Montenegro Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep significance in Montenegrin culture – at weddings and family celebrations, gold jewellery has been the most meaningful gift for generations. The gold versions of our Montenegro necklaces honour that tradition: the stainless steel necklaces feature 18K gold plating for a warm glow, while the brass crest pieces offer an especially rich gold tone. The silver versions provide a cooler, more modern look. For the complete set, we offer the Montenegro women's bundle – necklace and bracelet at a reduced price. We also have the Montenegro map bracelet in stainless steel (16 cm + 3 cm) and the Montenegro phone case.
Buying a Montenegro Necklace – What to Look For
If you're looking to buy a Montenegro necklace, pay attention to three things: material, craftsmanship and chain length. You can choose between 316L stainless steel (more durable, scratch-resistant) and brass with 18K gold plating (warmer gold tone). For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the double-headed eagle with lion and crown should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length: men's 56 to 65 cm, women's 40 cm plus extension. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.
How Many Montenegrins Live Abroad?
The Montenegrin diaspora is estimated at 300,000 to 500,000 people worldwide – compared to a home population of roughly 620,000. Serbia hosts the largest Montenegrin community outside Montenegro at approximately 70,000, reflecting the centuries-long cultural and political bond between the two countries. In Germany, an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 Montenegrins and their descendants have settled. Austria, Switzerland and Sweden also host significant communities. In the United States, around 50,000 Montenegrins reside, primarily in New York and Chicago. Australia has a small but active Montenegrin community as well. Montenegro celebrates its Independence Day on 21 May – the date of the 2006 referendum. A Montenegro necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
