Georgian Necklace – Wear Your Crest From the Caucasus

A Georgian necklace is more than jewellery – it's a declaration of where you come from. The cross of St. George, the grapevine, the mountains of the Caucasus: with a necklace from d'origine, you carry your Georgian roots right where the world can see them. Our Georgia Collection currently features the Georgian crest necklace for women – additional products including men's necklaces, bracelets and phone cases are already in the works. Whether you grew up in Tbilisi, Batumi, New York or Berlin: d'origine connects you to your heritage. At d'origine, people from more than 40 countries show where they come from.

What Does the Georgian Coat of Arms Mean?

The Georgian national emblem depicts St. George – the country's patron saint – on horseback, slaying the dragon. The shield is flanked by two golden lions. Above sits a crown, and below a banner bearing the motto "Strength lies in unity" (ძალა ერთობაშია). The cross of St. George – a red cross on a white field – adorns the Georgian flag. The current flag with five crosses was officially adopted in 2004, but the motif dates back to the medieval Kingdom of Georgia. Under Queen Tamar (1184–1213), Georgia experienced its Golden Age: the kingdom stretched across the entire Caucasus and was a centre of culture, architecture and poetry. Georgia is one of the oldest Christian nations in the world – Christianisation took place in 337 AD, just a few decades after Armenia. The Bolnisi cross, one of the country's oldest Christian symbols, dates from the 5th century and appears on Georgian coins, churches, and today on the national football team's jersey.

Georgian Jewellery: Goldsmithing, Enamel and 8,000 Years of Wine

Georgia looks back on a millennia-old craft tradition. The region's goldsmithing heritage reaches back to the Bronze Age: the National Museum in Tbilisi houses goldwork from the 3rd millennium BC that ranks among the finest in the ancient world. The cloisonné enamel technique (Minankari) is a uniquely Georgian speciality: ultra-thin gold cells are filled with coloured enamel – a technique that Georgian goldsmiths have perfected since the 7th century. The most outstanding examples are the gem-studded and enamelled icons and crosses in the monasteries of Gelati and Alaverdi. Georgia is also the world's oldest wine country: archaeological evidence confirms winemaking in Qvevri clay vessels dating back approximately 8,000 years – in 2013, UNESCO recognised Qvevri winemaking as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Wine motifs are also found in Georgian jewellery art. In the diaspora, jewellery with Georgian motifs serves a special purpose: the coat of arms around the neck makes belonging visible.

Buying a Georgian Necklace – What to Look For

If you're looking to buy a Georgian necklace, pay attention to material, craftsmanship and chain length. Our crest necklace is made from brass with 18K gold plating – providing a warm gold tone that is waterproof and allergy-friendly. For craftsmanship, check the pendant: St. George, the lions and the crown should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. The chain length of 40 cm + 5 cm extension fits most women comfortably. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.

How Many Georgians Live Abroad?

The Georgian diaspora is estimated at 1.5 to 2 million people worldwide – compared to a home population of roughly 3.7 million. Russia hosts the largest Georgian community abroad at approximately 600,000. Turkey is home to an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 people of Georgian heritage, primarily Laz and Meskhetian communities. Within the EU, Greece hosts around 80,000 Georgians, with growing communities in Germany (approximately 30,000), Spain and Italy. In the United States, an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 Georgian Americans have settled, primarily in New York and Philadelphia. A particularly notable community exists in Israel, where approximately 100,000 Georgian Jews reside – one of the oldest Jewish communities in Georgia emigrated in the 1970s. A Georgian necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
