Portugal Necklace – Wear Your Crest With Pride

A Portugal necklace is more than jewellery – it's a declaration of where you come from. The Quinas, the armillary sphere, the colours green and red: with a necklace from d'origine, you carry your Portuguese roots right where the world can see them. Our Portugal Collection includes necklaces, bracelets, rings, keychains and phone cases – all crafted from premium materials and backed by a 365-day guarantee. Whether you grew up in Lisbon, Porto, Luxembourg, Paris or New Bedford: this necklace connects you to your heritage. At d'origine, people from more than 40 countries show where they come from. The Portugal Collection is one of the most popular in our range.

What Does the Portuguese Coat of Arms Mean?

The Portuguese coat of arms is one of the oldest in Europe and tells the story of a nation. At its centre are five blue shields (Quinas) on a white field – they commemorate the legendary Battle of Ourique in 1139, where Afonso Henriques defeated five Moorish kings and became the first King of Portugal. Each shield contains five white dots (bezants), which tradition holds represent the five wounds of Christ. Around the shields lies a red border with seven golden castles, symbolising the fortresses recaptured from the Moors during the Reconquista. The armillary sphere (Esfera Armilar) behind the shield is the symbol of Portugal's seafarers and explorers: it was a navigation instrument that became the emblem of the Portuguese Empire, which in the 15th and 16th centuries stretched from Brazil to Macau. The green and red colours of the flag were adopted in 1911 after the founding of the Republic – green for hope, red for the blood of the fallen.

Portuguese Jewellery: Filigree, Gold and Saudade

Portugal has a centuries-old jewellery tradition that is unique in the world. At its heart is the art of filigree (Filigrana) – a technique in which ultra-thin gold or silver wires are shaped into intricate patterns. Filigree work originated in the region around Póvoa de Lanhoso and Gondomar in northern Portugal and has been recognised as part of the country's intangible cultural heritage since 2020. The most famous piece is the Viana Heart (Coração de Viana) – a filigree gold heart originating from Viana do Castelo that is worn worldwide as a symbol of love and Portuguese identity. At Portuguese weddings and festivals, gold jewellery plays a central role: women traditionally wear heavy gold at Romarias (pilgrimage festivals) as a sign of prosperity and faith. In the diaspora, jewellery with Portuguese motifs serves a special purpose: the Quinas or the armillary sphere around the neck makes belonging visible – to culture, to saudade, to home.

Material and Quality of Our Portugal Necklaces

Our Portugal Collection uses different materials depending on the product. The Portugal necklace for men is made from high-quality stainless steel with 18K gold plating – rust-proof, waterproof and scratch-resistant. The women's version is crafted from 18K gold-plated brass and hand-set with zirconia stones for an elegant, sparkling finish. Both versions are waterproof and allergy-friendly: wear them in the shower, at the gym or every day. All products come with a 365-day guarantee. Each necklace is delivered in a premium jewellery box – a perfect gift for Dia de Portugal on 10 June, weddings or any special occasion.

Portugal Necklace for Men and Women

Our Portugal Collection has something for everyone. The men's necklace features a 60 cm curb chain with a bold stainless steel pendant – the coat of arms in strong relief. The women's version comes with a finer 40 cm chain (plus 5 cm extension) and a zirconia-studded pendant – elegant yet equally expressive. Both are available in silver and gold. For those who want the complete look, the Portugal Bundle pairs a necklace with a matching bracelet at a reduced set price.

Portugal Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?

Gold has carried meaning in Portuguese culture for millennia – from the Roman gold finds on the Iberian Peninsula to the filigree craft that made Portugal famous worldwide. The gold version of our Portugal necklace honours that tradition: the 18K gold plating gives the coat of arms a warm, rich glow. The silver version offers a cooler, more modern look – perfect for everyday wear. Both variants are waterproof and allergy-friendly. Many customers order both colours or add the matching bracelet bundle.

More Than a Necklace: The Full Portugal Range

Beyond necklaces, our Portugal Collection offers a wide range of accessories. The Portugal bracelet pairs perfectly with the necklace and works on its own or as a set. The Portugal keychain is ideal for anyone who wants to carry their connection subtly but daily. Especially popular: the Portugal phone case and the Portugal ring with the crest motif. Every product combines Portuguese symbolism with premium material and everyday durability.

Buying a Portugal Necklace – What to Look For

If you're looking to buy a Portugal necklace, pay attention to three things: material, craftsmanship and chain length. For material, stainless steel and high-quality brass with 18K gold plating are the best options – far more durable than cheap fashion jewellery that tarnishes within weeks. For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the Quinas, castles and armillary sphere should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length, we recommend 55 to 60 cm for men and 40 to 50 cm for women. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.

How Many Portuguese Live Abroad?

The Portuguese diaspora is one of the largest in the world relative to the country's population. An estimated 5 million Portuguese and their descendants live outside Portugal – compared to a home population of roughly 10.3 million. France hosts the largest Portuguese community in Europe, with approximately one million people. Luxembourg has the highest proportion: around 16 percent of the country's population is of Portuguese origin, making the Portuguese the single largest foreign-born group. In the United States, roughly 1.4 million Portuguese Americans are concentrated in Massachusetts (New Bedford, Fall River), Rhode Island and California – communities rooted in the 19th-century whaling and fishing industries. Switzerland is home to around 270,000 and Germany to approximately 200,000 Portuguese residents. Brazil, once the crown jewel of the Portuguese Empire, has the world's largest Lusophone population at over 210 million. A Portugal necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
