The four firesteels represent the motto "Samo Sloga Srbina Spasava" – "Only Unity Saves the Serbs". This motto has accompanied Serbian history since the Middle Ages. The double-headed eagle itself dates back to the Nemanjić dynasty, which ruled Serbia from the 12th to the 14th century and expanded the kingdom to its greatest extent.
