Bulgarian Necklace – Wear the Lion That Stands for You

A Bulgarian necklace is more than jewellery – it's a declaration of where you come from. The lion, the colours white, green and red, the coat of arms with crown and oak leaves: with a necklace from d'origine, you carry your Bulgarian roots right where the world can see them. Our Bulgaria Collection currently includes the Bulgarian crest necklace for women and the Bulgaria phone case – additional products including men's necklaces, bracelets and keychains are already in the works. Whether you grew up in Sofia, Plovdiv, Chicago or Munich: d'origine connects you to your heritage. At d'origine, people from more than 40 countries show where they come from.

What Does the Bulgarian Coat of Arms Mean?

The Bulgarian national emblem features three golden lions on a dark red shield, crowned and framed by oak leaves. The lion is Bulgaria's oldest symbol and has accompanied the country since the founding of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th century. Under Tsar Ivan Asen II (1218–1241), Bulgaria reached its greatest territorial extent and cultural golden age – the lion became an imperial symbol. Beneath the shield reads the motto "Unity makes strength" (Съединението прави силата). The colours of the Bulgarian flag also carry meaning: white stands for peace and freedom, green for nature and agriculture, and red for courage and the blood shed in the fight for independence. Bulgaria holds a unique place in European cultural history: Saints Cyril and Methodius, born in the 9th century within the Bulgarian Empire, created the foundation for the Cyrillic alphabet, used today by approximately 250 million people worldwide. When you wear a Bulgarian necklace, you carry a symbol that spans centuries of European history.

Bulgarian Jewellery: Roses, Gold and Thracian Heritage

Bulgaria has a jewellery tradition reaching back to antiquity. The Thracians – the ancient people who inhabited present-day Bulgaria before the Slavs – were renowned goldsmiths. The Panagyurishte Gold Treasure (4th century BC) ranks among the most significant archaeological finds in Europe and showcases the mastery of Thracian goldsmithing. The Varna Gold Treasure (c. 4600 BC) is widely considered the oldest worked gold in the world. Bulgaria is also globally known as the "Land of Roses": in the Rose Valley near Kazanlak, rose oil has been produced since the 17th century – Bulgaria supplies approximately 85 percent of the world's rose oil. The rose has become established as a jewellery motif as well. At Bulgarian weddings and celebrations, gold plays an important role: the bride receives gold jewellery as a sign of family bond. In the diaspora, jewellery with Bulgarian motifs serves a special purpose: the lion around the neck makes belonging visible.

Buying a Bulgarian Necklace – What to Look For

If you're looking to buy a Bulgarian necklace, pay attention to material, craftsmanship and chain length. Our crest necklace is made from brass with 18K gold plating – providing a warm gold tone that is waterproof and allergy-friendly. For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the lions, crown and oak leaves should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. The chain length of 40 cm + 5 cm extension fits most women comfortably. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.

How Many Bulgarians Live Abroad?

The Bulgarian diaspora is estimated at 2 to 3 million people worldwide – compared to a home population of roughly 6.5 million. In Germany, approximately 400,000 to 500,000 Bulgarian nationals form one of the fastest-growing immigrant communities. Spain hosts around 200,000, with significant populations also in the United Kingdom, Italy and Greece. In the United States, roughly 300,000 Bulgarian Americans have settled – primarily in Chicago (which has one of the oldest Bulgarian communities in the US), New York and Los Angeles. Turkey is also home to a notable Bulgarian minority, particularly Pomaks (Slavic Muslims). A Bulgarian necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
