What Does the Sun on the Macedonian Flag Mean?
The Macedonian flag features a golden sun with eight rays on a red field. The rays extend to the edges of the flag and symbolise the "new sun of freedom" – an image from the Macedonian anthem "Denes nad Makedonija" (Today over Macedonia). The flag was adopted in its current form in 1995. Red and gold are the traditional colours of the country and reference the centuries-old history of the region. Macedonia lies at the heart of the Balkans and has a rich past: under Tsar Samuil (997–1014), the Macedonian empire stretched across much of South-Eastern Europe, with Ohrid as its cultural and religious centre. Ohrid itself – the city and the lake – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the oldest Christian churches in Europe. Saints Kliment and Naum of Ohrid played a central role in the spread of the Cyrillic alphabet in the 9th and 10th centuries. When you wear a Macedonian necklace, you carry a symbol that spans centuries of Balkan history.
Macedonian Jewellery: Filigree, Gold and Balkan Tradition
Macedonia has a jewellery tradition shaped by Byzantine, Ottoman and Slavic influences. Filigree art is one of the country's best-known craft traditions: in Skopje and Ohrid, ultra-thin silver and gold wires have been shaped into intricate jewellery for centuries. The Old Bazaar of Skopje (Stara Čaršija) – one of the largest and oldest bazaars in the Balkans – has been and remains a centre of this craftsmanship. Traditional Macedonian jewellery includes breast pendants, coin chains and belt buckles worn with folk costumes at weddings and festivals. Gold plays an important role at Macedonian weddings: the bride receives gold jewellery from the groom's family as a sign of prosperity and bond. In the diaspora, jewellery with Macedonian motifs serves a special purpose: the sun or the map around the neck makes belonging visible – to culture, to family, to home.
Material and Quality of Our Macedonian Necklaces
Our Macedonia Collection offers two material lines. The Macedonian necklace for men (56 cm in gold, 65 cm in silver, pendant 2.4 cm) and the Macedonian necklace for women (40 cm + 15 cm) are made from 316L stainless steel – rust-proof, waterproof and scratch-resistant. The Macedonian crest necklace for women (40 cm + 5 cm, pendant 2 cm diameter) is crafted from 18K gold-plated brass. All variants are waterproof and allergy-friendly. All products come with a 365-day guarantee. Each necklace is delivered in a premium jewellery box – a perfect gift for Independence Day on 8 September, Ilinden on 2 August or weddings.
Macedonian Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep significance in Macedonian culture – at weddings and family celebrations, gold jewellery has been the most meaningful gift for generations. The gold versions of our Macedonian necklaces honour that tradition: the 18K gold plating gives the pendant a warm, rich glow. The silver versions offer a cooler, more modern look – and echo the Macedonian filigree tradition. Alongside the necklaces, we also offer the Macedonia map bracelet in stainless steel (16 cm + 3 cm) and the Macedonia phone case.
Buying a Macedonian Necklace – What to Look For
If you're looking to buy a Macedonian necklace, pay attention to three things: material, craftsmanship and chain length. You can choose between 316L stainless steel (more durable, scratch-resistant) and brass with 18K gold plating (warmer gold tone). For craftsmanship, check the pendant: whether sun, map or crest – the details should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length: men's 56 to 65 cm, women's 40 cm plus extension. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, Australia, UK and beyond.
How Many Macedonians Live Abroad?
The Macedonian diaspora is estimated at 1.5 to 2 million people worldwide – nearly as large as the population of Macedonia itself (roughly 1.8 million). Australia hosts the largest Macedonian community outside Europe at approximately 200,000 – Melbourne in particular has a thriving Macedonian community and is sometimes called the largest Macedonian city outside the Balkans. In the United States and Canada, around 200,000 Macedonians have settled, with communities in Detroit, Chicago and Toronto. In Germany, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 Macedonians and their descendants reside, primarily in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. Italy (around 60,000), Switzerland and Sweden also host significant communities. Ilinden, the national holiday on 2 August, commemorates the Ilinden Uprising of 1903 and is celebrated by Macedonians across the diaspora. A Macedonian necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
